I'm trying to get some use out of an old laptop, so I recently upgraded my old HP 4410t notebook to Windows 10 (64bit). I did a fresh install. Everything works surprisingly well, but I can no longer get any sound. Windows recognizes a device and uses SoundMAX (or High Definition Audio Device if I uninstall the driver), but no matter what the settings I get no sound.
So I went into device manager and manually updated the driver with the file that the installer unpacks ("ADIHdAud"). Restart. No dice. When I logged in, now the volume icon in the notification bar had a red circle with an 'X' in it. No sound, and clicking on the icon made Windows run a troubleshooter that ended up reinstalling the generic driver (which also didnt play any sound but didn't have the red circle and at least showed that an audio device was recognized).

I had to switch to D1382 with AD1981B (AC'97) Audio Codec for the actual project. I will give this board a try with several different OS.Dos will be a test, much more interesting will be DOS in OS/2 because the "soundmax" has OS/2 drivers!!
